When we talk about religions, we often talk about differences, wars, terrorism, extremism…

But more often than not, we forget that beyond all the turmoil raised by the issues of the headscarf, the kirpan, visibly wearing a cross… that took the world by storm, religions are part of our cultures.

We easily pass by the fact that beyond all the tragic and sensationalist headlines, human beings live together, get together, cross each other’s path; they are neighbors, brothers and sisters, cousins and tell their life stories, myths, jokes, and share events full heartedly. Thus, humans are as diverse as the events themselves. Why talk about religions? Because they are the cornerstone of our traditions, our culture and their origins and because they are, for many, a main source of conflict. Religion is a part of us all, and of our education, whether it is in our way of embracing it or in rejecting it.

Islam and Christianity are considered opposite religions, bound never to meet. The only possible balance that seems to be left is a permanent state of conflict. In spite of this well established fact, in everyday’s life, the difference is not always obvious. Both religious have common rituals and beliefs that bridge the past and the present.

« Hyphen Islam-Christianity » is a live portrait of largely unknown landscapes, personalities and practices. Lebanon is a perfect example that illustrates the hyphen between these two religions because in spite of its small size and constant interreligious clashes, the common aspects and the bridging points between those two religions do exist. Once the religious label removed, it is easy to see that everyone lives together and that in many villages, mosques and churches are built alongside each other.

« Hyphen Islam-Christianity » is an innovative project that reaches out to meet, mainly through photography, Lebanese people from Lebanon and abroad. The purpose is to hear their stories and share it through written words in an attempt to give a more human dimension to the dialogue between Islam and Christianity, especially given the fact that every society, political system and institution in composed of different people. This project acts as a hyphen, bringing together two religions, two cultures, respecting each other’s differences.

Quebec’s official motto is “I remember”. It is in remembering the past that we learn and evolve to better live today. If each person seems to have a different story, it is in remembering them and relating them that we relate to each other as human beings and this motto becomes universal, shared by all people, all nations, all cultures, and all religions.
